An Opportunity for States and Cities

I have not been writing a lot because I am still digesting much of what the outcome of the US election and Trump’s presidency may bring. One thought that is forming though is that States will play a much bigger role going forward. If federal legislation in healthcare, labor, environment, etc. is rolled back that creates an opening for States to step in. That may be an opportunity as much or even more than a threat. We can have more variety of policies which at a time of great change will produce more information.

I am not convinced that we had the right balance of what is regulated at the federal versus the state level. I have previously written about the need for a Declaration of Inter-dependence and now would seem to be a good time for regional leaders (these could be heads of states or even mayors of very large cities) to start working more closely with each other around the world. Ultimately we will need to get past the current nation-state based system. And that will require figuring out a system that is globally federated and democratic which can only exist if there is minimal centralization of power.
