Much like everyone else I woke up this morning to the news that David Bowie has passed away. I was not an ardent Bowie fan but had always been impressed by just how innovative he was, not just musically but in his entire persona. He also pioneered the [celebrity bond](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebrity_bond) by bundling up his future royalty streams in 1997.

What made me fall in love though with Bowie was his opening performance at the [Concert for New York City](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Concert_for_New_York_City). It is easy to forget but that concert took place less than 6 weeks after the 9/11 attacks. I was admittedly skeptical about having a concert at all but I was completely blown away by Bowie’s minimalist opening. I have not been able to find a great video of it but here is one

A good reminder that often stripping things away is more powerful than adding. And that goes not just for performances, but also for our lives.
