# Fighting for Openness (Hint: It's not FB or even AAPL)

facebook, google, net neutrality, apple, openness

I have spent most of this morning reading reactions and thoughts about Facebook’s “[Open Graph](http://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph)” via Techmeme, Tumblr, Twitter and comments to [my post](http://continuations.com/post/540718931/facebook-and-the-net) and [Fred’s post](http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2010/04/one-graph-to-rule-them-all.html).  All of it has me convinced that the power of the web will be stronger than any one company.  That is with one important caveat: what we can do on the web has to stay as open as it is today!  This is why I believe the real fight is not with or between Google or Facebook or even Apple.  The real fight is for [net neutrality](http://continuations.com/post/194157590/and-now-the-net-neutrality-fight-starts-for-real) and against endeavors such as the [finally officially released ACTA](http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/04/eff-analysis-officially-released-acta-text) (International) and the [recently passed Digital Economy Bill](http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/apr/08/digital-economy-bill-passes-third-reading) (UK).  We all need to let our representatives know that maintaining the freedoms on the net is central to our future.
