Philosophy Mondays: Human-AI Collaboration
Today's Philosophy Monday is an important interlude. I want to reveal that I have not been writing the posts in this series entirely by myself. Instead I have been working with Claude, not just for the graphic illustrations, but also for the text. My method has been to write a rough draft and then ask Claude for improvement suggestions. I will expand this collaboration to other intelligences going forward, including open source models such as Llama and DeepSeek. I will also explore other moda...

Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
One thing that keeps surprising me is how quite a few people see absolutely nothing redeeming in web3 (née crypto). Maybe this is their genuine belief. Maybe it is a reaction to the extreme boosterism of some proponents who present web3 as bringing about a libertarian nirvana. From early on I have tried to provide a more rounded perspective, pointing to both the good and the bad that can come from it as in my talks at the Blockstack Summits. Today, however, I want to attempt to provide a coge...

I am co-hosting an event on May 14 at the BuzzFeed offices with folks from Represent.us / United Republic and others backing the American Anti-corruption Act. We will be discussing the rationale behind the Act and how the campaign plans to pass it via ballot initiative in cities, counties, states, and eventually federally. We are getting together from 6:30 to 8:30pm, and food and drink will be served. If you are interested please email me so that I can get your name added to the list (firstname at usv).
Just as a reminder as to why I am supporting this cause: we have an incredible fragmentation of attention happening (eg, in 1 minute 100 hours of video are uploaded to Youtube). This means that the political discourse is increasingly dominated by viral soundbites and by whoever has the money to buy attention through campaign advertising. That in turn has vastly increased the influence of special interests through lobbyists and through a revolving door between regulatory agencies and lobbying groups.
The American Anticorruption Act is a step in the direction of returning to a government of the people, by the people, for the people. So if that sounds like something you might want to support, please get in touch with me about the May 14th event.
