Philosophy Mondays: Human-AI Collaboration
Today's Philosophy Monday is an important interlude. I want to reveal that I have not been writing the posts in this series entirely by myself. Instead I have been working with Claude, not just for the graphic illustrations, but also for the text. My method has been to write a rough draft and then ask Claude for improvement suggestions. I will expand this collaboration to other intelligences going forward, including open source models such as Llama and DeepSeek. I will also explore other moda...

Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
One thing that keeps surprising me is how quite a few people see absolutely nothing redeeming in web3 (née crypto). Maybe this is their genuine belief. Maybe it is a reaction to the extreme boosterism of some proponents who present web3 as bringing about a libertarian nirvana. From early on I have tried to provide a more rounded perspective, pointing to both the good and the bad that can come from it as in my talks at the Blockstack Summits. Today, however, I want to attempt to provide a coge...

We are excited about going back to homeschooling for our three children after the summer vacation. The goal is for each of them to explore one or more interests and use those to motivate learning and skill building.
In order to get ready, we are looking for three awesome individuals we are calling guides, who will each have primary responsibility for the growth of one of our children.
As a guide, your job will be to help the child
1. Explore one or more areas of their interest (this includes finding and coordinating time with skilled experts)
2. Build and strengthen basic skills in reading, writing, presenting, researching, analyzing in pursuit of those interests
3. Overcome obstacles and challenge themselves
At present, one son (13) is interested in starting a business, another son (11) is interested in fashion and cooking and our daughter (13) in creating stories/videos. The guides need not specialize in any of these areas (although that’s a plus), but should be creative and resourceful enough to put together programs, curriculae and tap into experts in these particular areas of interest as well as core subjects.
The hours may vary depending on your availability but generally we are looking for someone who is available 2-3 hours four days a week and for a field trip once a week (ideally Fridays). You will need some additional time for preparation.
What are we looking for as a background?
1. Your are great with kids and ideally have recent experience with teenagers (e.g., as a tutor, camp counselor, teacher, music instructor)
2. You are technology savvy and actively seek out technology to assist you with tasks. Ideally you either already have some basic programming knowledge or want to acquire it.
3. You are intellectually curious and want to understand how things work and how different areas of knowledge are connected to each other.
4. You are personally pursuing “mastery” in some field. This could be anything, eg, a sport, a language, an instrument, cooking, acting, writing, public speaking. You understand the concept of deliberate practice and engage in it yourself.
If being a guide sounds interesting, please apply here. If you know somebody who would make a great guide, please forward this post to them.
P.S. The application is powered by Ziggeo, a video service co-founded by my wife Susan – you can also read her post about guides.
P.P.S. If you have any questions about the position, you can either ask publicly in the comments below or privately through the application.
