I love what I do as a VC at USV. Being involved with many different companies each with unique opportunities and challenges is absolutely amazing. But it does mean that I have very little time to build things myself. So this weekend for Father’s day Susan and the kids gave me the best present ever: a full day of building stuff! Susan has an idea for a new service and I worked on an alpha version.
There are three things I really love about developing software. First, more easily than with anything else (even skiing and sailing), I can achieve flow state and time literally seems suspended. Second, there is a concrete and tangible result of the activity for everyone to look at and – even better – interact with. Third, all along the way you get to solve little mini puzzles all wrapped up into the large puzzle of how the pieces fit together (e.g. proper hashing of passwords using bcrypt).
Of course we also packed in some more traditional activities, including breakfast with Sunday NY Times in bed and a BBQ. All in all the perfect day!
