Philosophy Mondays: Human-AI Collaboration
Today's Philosophy Monday is an important interlude. I want to reveal that I have not been writing the posts in this series entirely by myself. Instead I have been working with Claude, not just for the graphic illustrations, but also for the text. My method has been to write a rough draft and then ask Claude for improvement suggestions. I will expand this collaboration to other intelligences going forward, including open source models such as Llama and DeepSeek. I will also explore other moda...

Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
One thing that keeps surprising me is how quite a few people see absolutely nothing redeeming in web3 (née crypto). Maybe this is their genuine belief. Maybe it is a reaction to the extreme boosterism of some proponents who present web3 as bringing about a libertarian nirvana. From early on I have tried to provide a more rounded perspective, pointing to both the good and the bad that can come from it as in my talks at the Blockstack Summits. Today, however, I want to attempt to provide a coge...
Velocity is a great O'Reilly conference on web performance and operations and many of the devops attend each year. The theme for 2012 is “A Faster, Stronger Web.” I am honored to be giving a keynote there and what will likely be one of only a few non-technical presentations. Instead of talking about software and servers, I will focus on political and commercial threats and opportunities for a faster and stronger web. What does that mean?
On the political side, I will be covering threats coming from copyright holders (as we saw in PIPA and SOPA) and misguided approaches to privacy regulation (already in the EU and in the works here) and cyber security. On the commercial side I will look at how the shift to mobile apps is moving us away from the ability to link as a crucial underpinning of the web. Each of these threats also presents new opportunities and I will try to help identify what those are.
As I am still working on my talk, please let me know if you think there are other threats or opportunities for a faster, stronger web that I should make sure to address.
