Philosophy Mondays: Human-AI Collaboration
Today's Philosophy Monday is an important interlude. I want to reveal that I have not been writing the posts in this series entirely by myself. Instead I have been working with Claude, not just for the graphic illustrations, but also for the text. My method has been to write a rough draft and then ask Claude for improvement suggestions. I will expand this collaboration to other intelligences going forward, including open source models such as Llama and DeepSeek. I will also explore other moda...

Web3/Crypto: Why Bother?
One thing that keeps surprising me is how quite a few people see absolutely nothing redeeming in web3 (née crypto). Maybe this is their genuine belief. Maybe it is a reaction to the extreme boosterism of some proponents who present web3 as bringing about a libertarian nirvana. From early on I have tried to provide a more rounded perspective, pointing to both the good and the bad that can come from it as in my talks at the Blockstack Summits. Today, however, I want to attempt to provide a coge...

I am really looking forward to today. We have the founders and/or CEOs of our portfolio companies in town for our annual portfolio company summit. We consider it a privilege to be able to convene such an awesome group of folks. We always come away having learned a ton of things. Here are some of the topics that we are planning to cover today:
Living in a multi-device world. With iPhones selling like hotcakes, Android beginning to take off, various tablets in the offing, etc. companies will have to think about how to make their sites and services available. Here is a chart culled from AdMob’s monthly reports that shows the incredible growth happening in mobile alone:
Another topic we will be talking about is internationalization. We have a number of companies in the portfolio that either already have or are about to embark on internationalization of their sites and services. Here is a chart to illustrate why that’s important. It shows Facebook’s growth.
Before pulling this together, I had no idea just how much Europe accounted for the last 12 month of growth at Facebook.
Other topics will include scaling (not just from a technology perspective, but the entire organization) and the importance of having an API. For each of these topics we have one or two slides to motivate the discussion, but we do very little presenting. It is the discussion among the group that produces the valuable insights.
